Julia had bought a packet of palm oil from a ration shop in Veerakeralam, ward 18 on August 1 but when she opened the packet to use the palm oil for cooking, she smelt kerosene. Suspecting adulteration, Julia poured the oil in the pan and lit the stove to cook but was shocked to see the pan catch fire within seconds.

A shaken Julia reported the incident to her neighbours who immediately checked the palm oil they had purchased from the same ration shop. They discovered that all the palm oil packets had been adulterated with kerosene. "It was only when I started to cook that I realised that kerosene had been mixed in the palm oil pouch bought from the ration shop," said Julia,. Subsequently, the residents in the area immediately reported the incident to the concerned ration shop.
