Irate residents of Somaiyampalayam slam District administration regarding water woes

Coimbatore: Irate residents of Somaiyampalayam Panchayat slammed the District administration saying, "Resolve water issues and then hold Grama Sabha meetings." This was in response to the Grama Sabha meetings that were conducted all across Coimbatore district on Independence Day.

The District Collector, K Rajamani participated in the Grama Sabha meeting held at Vellimalaipatinam Panchayat in Thondamuthur and addressed the gathering. "Grama Sabha meeting is held to make people aware of the development work undertaken in their area," he said.

Under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, the small and marginal farmers were given land for cultivation. The Kisan Samman fund-raising scheme provides small and marginal farmers with up to Rs. 6,000 per annum.

Earlier, the District Collector also took part in the public event held at Perur Pateeshwarar temple. Rubanshankar Raj, District Planning Director, Assistant Director of Panchayats, Srinivasan, Regional Development Officers V Sudhakar, K Parthiban, J K Vijayakumar, Panchayat Secretary Marappan, Village Administrative Officer Vignesh and Gangase also participated in the meeting.

Secretary Manohar presided over the Grama Sabha meeting held at Devarayapuram Panchayat Office. On behalf of the Krishnammal College for Women, a team led by Professors Arthi, Sushila, Sasikala and Ezhili participated in the meeting and explained about the process of making manure from fish waste.

The Grama Sabha meeting was held in the seven panchayats of Kurudampalayam, Pannimadai, Somaiyampalayam, Nanjundapuram, Chinnathadagam, Ashokapuram and Veerapandi near Thudiyalur. The Regional Development Officer Mohan Babu presided over the meeting held at Periyanaickenpalayam and the Deputy Regional Development Officer Sathish presided over the meeting at Somayampalayam Panchayat.

A few women who participated in the meeting noted that the lack of health services in the area could lead to the high risk of spreading the disease like dengue fever. "Water is distributed once in 20 days, and officials have not taken any action yet. Resolve the water issue first and then conduct Grama Sabha meetings," urged the women causing a stir in the area.

In the meeting held at Chinnathadagam, the public appealed for information on the accounts. They were furious that the water supply in Pannimadai, Kurudampalayam, Ashokapuram and Veerapandi panchayats was erratic. The officials promised to accelerate the work.

The Grama Sabha meeting was also held in seven panchayats belonging to Coimbatore S S Kulam, Keeranatham, Vellanaipatti, Athipalayam, Agraharasamakulam, Kondaiyampalayam, Vellamadai and Kallipalayam. The Regional Deputy Officer Lalitha was present at the meeting at the Vellamadai Panchayat. The former Union Chairman Krishnasamy, President of Sangamam Farmers' Federation and the former Panchayat leader Gandhimathi Varadharajan, Co-operative Society leader Arul Kumar and a number of villagers took part in the meeting.

The Deputy Regional Development Officer Shanmugapriya took part in the Grama Sabha Meeting in Neelambur Panchayat belonging to the Sulur Panchayat Union and heard out the grievances of the public. The meeting discussed the request of people belonging to Adi Dravida and Arundhati clan who had asked the Government to talk to the company that owns the land near their graveyard to donate the area for the construction of an electric crematorium. VAO Karthikeyan, Panchayat Secretary Shyam Kumar, District Child Welfare Officer Deepa and many other community activists participated in the meeting.
