Coimbatore: Minister S.P Velumani on Sunday distributed flood relief materials and aids to 22 beneficiaries of Sarkarpathi village who lost their homes in to the recent torrential rains.
Coimbatore: Minister S.P Velumani on Sunday distributed flood relief materials and aids to 22 beneficiaries of Sarkarpathi village who lost their homes in to the recent torrential rains.
The tribals were provided Re. 5000 worth of rice, cereals, sugar, milk and other basic items. The family who lost their child in the mishap were provided with a solatium of Rs. 4 lakhs.
While addressing the reporters, S.P Velumani said, "Due to the torrential rains last week, the tribal settlements living along the Sarkarathy power house suffered loss of life and properties."
The Minister also recalled the incident where a child lost his life. "After a huge rock rolled over and fell at zero point, water from contour canal deviated from it's path and overflowed sideways and entered the settlement area in Sarkarpathi Nagar paving way to landslides. In this incident, the belongings and houses of the 22 residents were washed away. And, also a child was washed away in the slushy floods."
He also appreciated the swift action of the Revenue department, Police and Fire & Rescue Departments which helped save the lives of close to 60 people. The rescued were sheltered at Sarkarpathi post-housing area and at Sarkparpathi Power station.
"They were provided with food, blankets and purified drinking water. Following the Chief Minister's directive, the Valparai MLA visited the affected people and offered Rs.10,000 each and 37 items to the 22 affected families", noted Minister SP Velumani.
He also added that an alternate place for constructing houses for the flood victims would be soon chosen and the project will commence, on priority.
Tamil Nadu Deputy Speaker Pollachi V. Jayaraman, District Collector K. Rajamani, Valparai MLA Kasthuri Vasu, Revenue Divisional Officer Ravikumar, Supervising Engineer Muthusamy, Asst Engineer Leela and other Govt officials were present.
