Coimbatore: The Vellalore dumpyard has been a constant source of issues for the public in and around the Vellalore area. It has posed grave health issues to the public in the area and has contaminated the groundwater near the Vellalore area. An independent director, G. Krithiha, of Coimbatore Smart City Limited (CSCL) who has looked at the issue has now proposed a Waste to Energy (WtE) plant to clear the legacy waste at Vellalore. The proposal to CCMC is to build a WtE plant to clear legacy waste and also waste that is getting dumped at Vellalore dumpyard on a daily basis.
Addressing a press meet here today Krithiha stated “the energy could be generated in the form of electricity or heat from the incineration of waste at the proposed WtE plant. While electricity could be sold, the ashes generated after burning the waste could be used as a byproduct for manufacturing bricks.” She agreed that “there are a few negative perspectives for this type of plant but she was confident that the accumalated legacy waste at Vellalore dumpyard which has been lying there for many years could be cleared if the plant was approved.”
Krithiha added that, "a China-based firm is interested in signing a deal with Corporation to establish the plant at an estimated capacity of processing 1,000 tonnes of waste per day. I have been doing a field study for the past seven months to understand the methods that are currently in practice to dispose of the waste. The composting or bio-mining plans to reduce the waste could be time-consuming. This proposal would save a lot of time and the proposed technology adheres to European standards as far as pollution norms are concerned".
She is likely to present the proposal to the state government on Wednesday. “Hopefully all stakeholders are appraised of this proposal and the solution is reached soon to clear the long pending waste disposal issue at Vellalore can be addressed once and for all”, say residents from Vellalore area.
