Coimbatore : Joining hands with the residents of Kumarasamy Colony near Muthannan Kulam here, who have been living in encroached lands, MP P.R Natarajan spear-headed an agitation against the eviction notice issued by the Corporation at Gandhipark here on Saturday.

During the protest, MP P.R Natarajan along with the residents of Kumarasamy Colony which is located off Thadagam road here raised slogans against the Corporation for trying to evict the people who have been living here for several decades in encroached lands.

"We will never allow the Corporation to chase the poor and hardworking public from their homes. The Corporation is trying to evacuate all the residents living along the Muthannan Kulam and adjacent areas alleging them of encroaching public land", he said.

He added that in the name of Smart City development, the move by the Corporation to evict daily labourers from their homes is highly condemnable.

Protestors including women raised slogans against the Corporation to withdraw the notice and allow them to reside here.

The MP also invited all the affected people to assemble at the Slum Clearance Board office on Tuesday (August 20) to protest against the Corporation and claim their livelihood.

It may be noted that the Corporation and Slum Clearance board have pasted notices in and around Muthannan Kulam marking August 20 as the deadline and warning of disconnecting electricity and water connections. In this state, the MP has reportedly met the people, a couple of days back and assured the people of revoking the eviction notice.

DMK regional secretary Shanmugasundaram, MDMK District Secretary R.R Mohan Kumar, CPM District Secretary V. Ramamoorthy and member for various political parties were present in the protest.
