Coimbatore : It was an unforgettable Thursday for the students of PSGR Krishnammal College (PSGRKC) for Women, as they had an opportunity to take part in the Grama Sabha Meeting held in Devarayapuram and Narasipuram villages here on August 15.
Coimbatore : It was an unforgettable Thursday for the students of PSGR Krishnammal College (PSGRKC) for Women, as they had an opportunity to take part in the Grama Sabha Meeting held in Devarayapuram and Narasipuram villages here on August 15.
A team of faculty members along with the students from the Department of Zoology of PSGRKC, participated and demonstrated the technology of Bioconversion of Fish Waste to Liquid Fertilizer to the villagers who took part in the the Gram Sabha meeting convened and chaired by District Collector K.Rajamani and District Magistrate at Viraliyur village here.

As part of the 73rd Independence day, this program was organized to work directly with the rural people and help them uplift their socio economic status. During the event, the students distributed fish fertilizers to the farmers and explained the benefits to them.
As an extension activity, a few identified villages for Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA) such as Devarayapuram and Narasipuram villages were chosen and the technology was demonstrated to the rural people.
Women self help groups at Devarayapuram were educated and encouraged to learn the technology from the students. The women expressed that the demonstration on the production of fish fertilizer training was very useful.

A follow-up program was organized at Narasipuram village where the project was already implemented. The villagers showed keen interest to learn the technique, and they pooled more people from their neighborhood villages to attend the hands-on-training and get benefitted.
Interested rural entrepreneurs were invited to establish links with the markets in urban and semi-urban areas and learn the technique of making the fish fertilisers. Inturn, the students were advised to develop a deeper understanding and work collaboratively with the villagers to learn about any specific needs proposed by them.
Elucidating on their experience of collaborating with villagers, the students jointly expressed that the program helped them gain realistic understanding of the people from rural areas. 'The opportunity helped us enhance our skill sets involving community participation, leadership qualities and sharing knowledge", said a student who was part of the program.

Turning fish waste into commercial organic fertilizer is a novel proposition. Disposal and reuse of fish waste have long been a challenge for the fish processing industry. Fish waste management is regarded to be a major issue with significant impact on the environment, and has become a menace for the public living in close proximity to the fish markets in Ukkadam.
Fermentation of fish wastes into Fertilisers
Traditional fermentation depends on naturally occurring micro-organism and enzymes. However, spontaneous fermentation involves inoculation of raw materials with a small quantity of previously fermented material.
Effective micro-organisms comprise a mixture of beneficial, naturally occurring micro-organisms in fish are used as inoculants to fish waste. The end product aids in increasing the microbial diversity and enhancing growth, yield and quality of plant and plant products.
