The Nilgiris : Hundreds of farmers in the Nilgiris district are clueless about their future, as acres of cultivable land has been washed away in the flash floods and torrential rains that lashed the district in the first week of August.
Among the affected areas, villages near Ooty including Kodapamandhu, Kaandhal, Emerald and Ithalar are the worst affected, as over 500 acres of farming land has become unrecognisable.
Vegetable crops like carrots, beets, cabbage, potatoes, beans, capsicum, strawberries and other exotic vegetables like zucchini, brocolli, chinese lettuce have been washed away in the rains. As the top soil has completely eroded, the farmers have sought the help of the district administration and the State government to provide quality seeds and fertilisers to resume cultivation.
They have also appealed the State government to provide necessary compensation, as it would take at least a month to resume cultivation and another three months for the new plants to begin yielding.
