Coimbatore: The Ukkadam Police registered a case on Saturday against unknown persons for circulating ‘misleading’ videos, statements and memes on social media and other platforms about the 24x7 drinking water supply project of Coimbatore Corporation, implemented by the private firm Suez Projects Private Limited.

The case was registered based on a complaint filed by P Gopalakrishnan, the team leader of the project monitoring committee that oversees the civic body’s 24x7 drinking water distribution project. The videos, statements and memes circulated by unknown persons claimed that the Corporation sold the rights of water distribution to the firm; that the Government sold the water sources at Siruvani and Pilloor; and that Suez would create an artificial shortage of water to charge more money for water supply which the economically weaker sections will not be able to afford.

The case was registered under Section 505(1)(b) (with intent to cause, or which is likely to cause, fear or alarm to the public, or to any section of the public whereby any person may be induced to commit an offence against the State or against the public tranquility) of the IPC.

On investigation, K A Abdul Razaq (31) from Rajiv Nagar, Karumbukkadai was arrested and the police informed that necessary action will also be taken on the others who were involved in spreading the false rumours.
