The Nilgiris: Melur Panchayat is presently laying a 250 m concrete road in Thuthurmattam Tribal Housing Colony which has been estimated at Rs.10,00,000. But the tribals allege that after repeated requests for 10 years, the roads are finally being laid albeit poorly, without getting the right proportions of raw materials and not adhering to the 1 1/2 inch base that has to be laid. They alleged that gravel stones and M- Sand are being spread out on the stretch with a thinly-smeared cement atop for a finish.

"After 10 years of requests, if the road work is going to be laid out in this fashion, the low quality road is of no use to us. Even after several complaints to the Coonoor Panchayat Union, no action has been taken," lamented the tribals. They have requested higher officials to inspect the road work and take necessary action to ensure the roads are properly laid.
