Coimbatore: Tension prevailed at the construction site of the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board at Kalimangalam village in Coimbatore, with construction work continuing despite a Chennai High Court ban.
The Court on Wednesday had banned the construction activity after the Forest Department disowned all responsibility for wildlife attacks in the area. “We will not be responsible if any people are hurt or killed by wild animals,” stated the Forest Department categorically in an affidavit filed in the Court. Hearing the pleas of the petitioner and verifying the documents, the Court thereon banned construction work at Kalimangalam village.
However, construction had not halted even on Friday. When approached regarding the ban, the contractor stated that the order for closure had not yet been received. Thereafter, locals joined social activists protesting against the construction activity. Construction work finally came to a grinding halt around 10.30 am and workers were asked to leave the site.
Hearing of the PIL has been postponed to September 18.
