Coimbatore: Even as the youth of Somayampalayam and Navavoor Pirivu are rejoicing after rain waters reached the pond after many years, they have requested the authorities to clear encroachments clogging the feeder channel to increase the storage.

In the Grama Sabha meeting held in the Somayampalayam village on Thursday, members of the Aaniver Amaippu who first took up clean up of the pond, have urged officials to desilt the remaining stretch of the inlet channel before the the next onset of rains during the monsoon.
“The inlet channel from the foothills to the check dam at the pond is prone to agricultural and construction encroachments on both the sides. Open defecation on the bunds is also a recurring problem,” said one of the members of Aaniver.
The pond and the channel was initially renovated by the youth of the village who started the Aaniver Amaippu. Their efforts were later honoured through the Centrally sponsored Jal Shakthi Abhiyan scheme.
Their efforts proved fruitful as the surplus monsoon rains of the ongoing season brought waters to the pond in the past week.
Through the scheme, officials started desilting a small pond at Somayampalayam Panchayat and have further promised to set up more check dams and recharge wells on the stream, which is one of the tributaries of River Noyyal.
A miyawaki patch is also planned on the bund of the stream.
Of the four km stretch of the channel that leads to the pond, upto 1.5 km has been desilted and cleared of all encroachments.
But the renovation of the remaining 2.5 km stretch is yet to commence.
