Coimbatore: Dr. N. Kumar, Vice Chancellor, TNAU hoisted the National flag and delivered the Independence day address at the Independence Day celebrations organised at the TNAU campus.
In his address the Vice-Chancellor recalled the eternal memories of the martyrs, who sacrificed their lives for new lease of life. He stressed that unity alone can safeguard and nurture our Independence.
The VC noted that "science and technology had paved the way for enhancing food grain production, up to the tune of five times since Independence to meet out the growing demands of the population".
"The successful implementation of Green Revolution technologies transformed India into a self-sufficient country despite the burgeoning population." the VC noted.
"The gross area under cultivation had drastically come down due to factors such as industrialisation, urbanisation, real estate interests, deficit rainfall, drought condition and migration of labour. Sudden cloud burst and excess rainfall in a period of 24 hrs are becoming a challenge for soil and water conservation engineers." he said.
Earlier, the Vice chancellor inspected the Independence day parade by NCC cadets along with Capt. Dr. S . Manonmani and Dr. Santosh Patil, NCC Officers of the University. The Vice Chancellor gave away the prizes and certificates to the cadets who participated in various NCC activities and Combined Annual Training Camp.
Subsequently, the Vice Chancellor hoisted the National flag at Century old Madras Agricultural Students Union located at Campus premises.
After the celebration mass tree planting was carried out by the NCC and NSS volunteers in the presence of honourable Vice Chancellor.
The event was successfully organized by Dr. T. Raguchandar, Dean, Centre for students welfare.
The University officers, Scientists, Staff, Students, NCC cadets, NSS volunteers and school children of TNAU campus participated in the celebration.
