Coimbatore: The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) has plans to procure two robotic machines with the help of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited to clean the sewerage lines.

During a press meet today, the Corporation Commissioner, Sravan Kumar Jatavath said, "Two bandicoots would be procured through CSR funds from HPCL. In addition to this, CCMC would purchase one robotic machine using our funds. The cost of each machine is about 32 lakhs but we are negotiating for 17 lakhs."
Apart from this, the CCMC currently owns nine suction-cum-jetting equipment size to unclog sewer channels. Once the three bandicoots are purchased, Coimbatore will be the third city after Kumbakonam and Tuticorin to use robots for clearing the sewerage. The machines are likely to be procured from Genrobotics, a Kerala-based start-up.
Sravan Kumar also briefed the media on the developmental projects carried out in the city. Talking about LED lights, he said "Around 9,973 out of total 58,878 sodium vapour streetlights have been converted into LED lights, and most of the work shall be completed before Deepavali. By the new year, all of the city's lights will turn to white from yellow."
Speaking on Smart City projects, the Commissioner said, "For three months in a row, May, June and July, Coimbatore has been ranked as the no.1 Smart City in Tamil Nadu. In India, Coimbatore is ranked at no.5 in project execution, with 60-crore worth projects having been completed and 580 crore-worth projects in progress."
On drinking water supply, the Commissioner stated that with the torrential rainfall received by the city during last week, the city's drinking water needs will be taken care of adequately without further concerns. With regard to new connections, the CCMC has temporarily frozen new drinking water connections for the residents but the process is likely to be resumed before the end of August.
