Coimbatore: The District Administration along with other Government Departments have offered financial support for about 85 tribals dwelling in the Kandivazhi hamlet in Anaikatti who are homeless.
Coimbatore: The District Administration along with other Government Departments have offered financial support for about 85 tribals dwelling in the Kandivazhi hamlet in Anaikatti who are homeless.
While the District Administration has offered to construct 19 houses in the hamlet under the Green Houses Project, the Coimbatore Forest Department has planned to offer support through the Eco Development Committee (EDC) funds available with the Department. About Rs.1.8 lakhs will be provided by the State Government for each beneficiary under the Green Houses scheme. However, the remaining sum will have to be pooled in by the beneficiaries themselves, which was reportedly impossible for the tribal people who live off their daily wages.
The tribals have been living in houses built more than 30 years ago which have been heavily damaged over time, especially with the recent southwest monsoon lashing the region. The tribals had to be shifted safely to the Kondanur Pudhur Union school since the roofs of their houses had begun to cave in. A team of officials from the administration made multiple visits to the hamlet to inspect the damaged houses, following which a decision was taken to construct houses for these tribals under the project.
The District Administration has also sought the help of private firms and other Government Departments to help complete the project by contributing funds. A request has been made seeking sponsorship from more people to aid the completion of the project.
