Coimbatore: Marking International Elephant Day which was celebrated worldwide on August 12, over 300 students from four colleges in the city rallied to create awareness on the need to protect elephants.
Coimbatore: Marking International Elephant Day which was celebrated worldwide on August 12, over 300 students from four colleges in the city rallied to create awareness on the need to protect elephants.
In an event jointly organised by the Nature Conservation Society (NCS), Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) and Coimbatore Forest Department, students from PSGR Krishnammal College for Women, Sri Ramakrishna College of Arts and Science for Women, Sri Shakthi Institute of Engineering and Technology and Government Arts Science College, Coimbatore rallied for more than 2 km for the cause of elephants.
The rally was flagged off by the District Forest Officer, D Venkatesh in the presence of C Badrasamy, Honorary Wildlife Warden for Coimbatore, N I Jalaludin, President of NCS, J Anash Ahmed from NCS, D Boominathan Landscape Coordinator of WWF and S Saravanan, Coordinator of WWF.
Flagging off the rally, Venkatesh spoke about the Asian Elephant to the students. "The 'Elephant' plays an important role in the ecosystem. It requires a vast habitat to meet its requirements of food, water and shelter. A family herd of elephants need 550 to 600 km of habitat which are being increasingly fragmented due to various developmental activities. It is our responsibility to protect elephants for our future generation,” he stated.
Students rallied through Bharathi Park Road, GCT, Lawley Road and culminated the rally at the Tamil Nadu Forest Academy. During the rally, the students held placards and raised slogans with messages on elephant conservation.
