The Nilgiris: A wild elephant which entered Sembamkolli Adivasai Colony rampaged the hut of Nanjan (55) an adivasi living in the colony.
Nanjan and his family fled the house through the back door, and took refuge in a relative's shack when the elephant ransacked the house.
A herd of wild elephants have been constantly straying into Sembamkolli, Kutrimutri, Otravayal and Machikolli in Devarsolai Panchayat in Gudalur Taluk.
"This has instilled fear amongst the tribals. The elephants are also routinely damaging the crops" the locals said.
Nanjan said, "A herd of elephants including calves have been routinely damaging the houses and our belongings. I request the forest officials to extend compensation for the losses suffered by us".
In a similar incident, a lone elephant entered Selukadi region. The public who saw the elephant ran for their lives. The elephant subsequently was found straying into Gudalur road and later entered a tea estate without causing any harm to the people.
As recently as last month, a lone elephant destructed the parked vehicles near the colony.
