Nilgiris rains: Minister Udumalai Radhakrishnan hands over Rs. 50 lakhs to family who lost their kin

The Nilgiris : As a result of heavy torrential rains in the district of Nilgiris, around 5034 people have been evacuated and accomodated in relief camps.

The Nilgiris : As a result of heavy torrential rains in the district of Nilgiris, around 5034 people have been evacuated and accomodated in relief camps. 

So far, five people have lost their lives to landslides and flooding. NDRF teams have been dispatched to aid the affected areas. A majority of the people in the relief camps are from Avalanche and Emerald areas. 

Avalanche has witnessed a massive downpour from August 4. Though the Meterological department is yet to release the exact numbers, the district of Nilgiris in total has received 2,304 millimetres of rainfall in the 24-hour-window till Thursday morning. 



Animal Husbandry, Minister Udumalai K Radhakrishnan visited the flood hit areas in Ooty and Gudalur on Sunday. Addressing the media, he said "Relief works are being carried on war footing at Avalanche and Oveli. All basic amenities for the people accomodated at relief camps are addressed, on priority. Also, feeds for the cattle stranded in the flood hit areas are also being arranged."

He apprised that Rs.50 lakhs has been distributed to five families who lost their kin. Alternate dwelling has been arranged for people from Naduvattam in Gudalur. 

The Tamil Nadu State Disaster Management Authority (TNSDMA) has ordered State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) to move to the Nilgiris District.
