Coimbatore: The Minister for Municipal Administration and RDI, S P Velumani announced that the Ravuthar bridge damaged due to the Noyyal floods would be reconstructed as a high level bridge.
Coimbatore: The Minister for Municipal Administration and RDI, S P Velumani announced that the Ravuthar bridge damaged due to the Noyyal floods would be reconstructed as a high level bridge.
Coimbatore city has been experiencing incessant heavy rains in the city for the past week that resulted in the flooding of River Noyyal. The surplus water flooding from the River Noyyal has reportedly washed away the bridges connecting Singanallur-Vellalur and Ravuthar bridge, near Sulur. Meanwhile, the Minister for Municipal Administration & RDI, S P Velumani visited the Ravuthar bridge that was damaged due to the heavy rains.
He was accompanied by MLA Kandasamy of Sulur assembly and the District Collector K Rajamani.
Speaking to the media, Minister S P Velumani said, "Due to the incessant torrential downpour in Nilgiris district, the Disaster Management Department and higher officials have camped there to conduct relief measures. Precautionary measures have been taken in Coimbatore, even before the rains. Rainfall of 275.47 mm has been recorded in Coimbatore with minor impacts. But the people of Coimbatore are happy about the rains. The Noyyal River has experienced a surplus water inflow for the first time in the last 40 years. As the ponds and canals has been cleaned, the water in them has been overflowing.
The water inflow in the ponds are slow even though the River Noyyal is overflowing as the channel to the pond is small. The water inflow channel to Sengulam was repaired as soon as it was damaged. Due to the heavy rains in the Nilgiris district, the water level in Pillur dam is 97.5 feet, and that of Siruvani dam is 43 feet. All the dams in the city are filled to the maximum capacity and all the 21 ponds in the city are full and overflowing.
Mobile medical teams have been set up for flood victims and relief work is in full swing. If the public feels that it is not safe in their residential areas, then they should come to the relief camps immediately. More than 1,335 people in Coimbatore have taken shelter in 17 relief camps. 72 houses are partially damaged while 27 houses are completely damaged," added the Minister.
Minister S P Velumani announced that the Ravuthar bridge damaged due to the floods in River Noyyal would be converted to a high level bridge immediately. He added that after inspecting the Singanallur-Vellalur bridge with authorities, action will be taken. "It is wrong to tell that ponds in Coimbatore don't have water due to the Smart City Project. More than 10,000 houses encroached for more than 100 years have been evacuated, and have been given alternate houses," stated the Minister.
