Due to the torrential downpour in the Western Ghats over the past on week, the Pillur Dam in Mettupalayam, Coimbatore has been flooded twice this year, and its surplus water is being discharged into the river Bhavani.
Due to incessant rains in various parts of Nilgiris district which is the catchment area of the Pillur dam, around 88,000 cubic feet of surplus water has been discharged from the Pillur dam to River Bhavani resulting in the floods in the river and the residential areas near the riverbank, Samanna Water House & Bhavani River bridge.
The flood-affected victims were rescued with the help of Revenue and Fire dept officials and were sheltered in private wedding halls. Meanwhile, Minister S.P Velumani visited the victims sheltered in the camps and provided them with relief items and commiserated with them. He then discussed with the Disaster Management team after inspecting the River Bhavani bridge on the water inflow of the river.
Speaking to the reporters, Minister S.P Velumani said: "1700 flood-affected victims have been rescued and sheltered in camps, and all the necessary facilities have been provided". He then noted that the disaster management team is well prepared as a precautionary measure to avoid any mishaps.
"As a permanent solution to the problem of flooding that occurs during heavy rains in the Pillur dam and to prevent water from entering the coastal region of the river Bhavani banks, 350 apartments worth Rs 25 crores will be allocated" declared Minister S.P Velumani.
Minister S.P Velumani was accompanied by District Collector K.Rajamani IAS, MLA of Mettupalayam assembly constituency O.K Chinnaraj, MLA Arunkumar, M.P Selvaraj and other govt officials during the study.
