Over 233 places in the Nilgiris district identified as rain-affected, relief works underway

The Nilgiris: The Nilgiri district has been experiencing incessant rains for the past few days in which extensive damages to property and loss of lives have been reported.


The Nilgiris: The Nilgiri district has been experiencing incessant rains for the past few days in which extensive damages to property and loss of lives have been reported.

Owing to non-stop heavy downpours, many areas in Nilgiri district have been affected to various degrees.. While five people have lost their lives, extensive damage to the property has also been reported due to flooding and waterlogging.



Based on the damages reported thus far, about 233 places in the Nilgiri district have been identified as rain-affected areas. Among them, 23 places are categorized as most affected, 80 places are affected, and 130 places are affected to an extent. 

As many as 25 rescue teams have been deployed for the relief and rescue operations in these areas. 

A total of 491 personnel from the State Disaster Management Committee, National Disaster Management team, Armed Forces, Fire Brigade have been involved in the rescue operations. 

The rescue team have been given orders to concentrate more on Gudalur, Kundah, Pandalur and Ooty. 

A total of 155 relief centres are being set up. In the 26 relief centres are already functioning, 157 families have been sheltered. 

“Over 2400 people were rescued as of now. It is also planned to set up additional relief camps for relief work if needed” said, the Revenue officials.
