Coimbatore: The Marxist Communist MP P.R Natarajan has apprised of a 'massive' protest and one day bandh, condemning the city corporation against increase in property tax and water distribution agreement made with Suez.
He also handed over a petition to Prasanna Ramasamy, Deputy Corporation Commissioner requesting to revoke the water distribution agreement signed with Suez.
While addressing the media, the MP said, “We have been continuously protesting against the decision to hand over water distribution rights of the city to a foreign company. Even in the days with no technology, our labourers were able to bring the Siruvani water to the city through pipes. In this scenario, handing over a contract to a foreign company and turning blind to the resourceful manpower we have here is nothing but an act of deceit by the City Corporation."
He also alleged that, “In future, there will arise a situation where the people of this city will have to plead and rely completely on this foreign company for water, even after paying hefty bills. Removing and altering existing pipelines has resulted in battered roads and huge inconvenience to the people. We have demanded a rebuke of the agreement and have requested an open discussion for which the Deputy Commissioner has agreed”.
He further added that the property tax has increased over 50% and 100%, like never before. The MP confronted that the revision of tax has been decided after a government order with no representation of the public. He accused that the revised taxes has burdened the citizens.
"If Corporation fails to revoke the Suez agreement, CPM along with representatives of public, political parties and organisations will host a massive protest", apprised the CPI (M) MP.
He also hinted that the Corporation should take responsibility of any law and order issue arising out of their protest.
