Coimbatore: The public has been banned from sightseeing and taking selfies along the Bhavani river, following the flooding of the river owing to the torrential rains that have lashed the region for the past five days.

The south-west monsoon’s impact has been high in regions like Coimbatore and Nilgiris. The Pillur Dam with a maximum capacity of 100 feet reached 97.5 and due to safety concerns, 40,000 cubic feet of water was released through the sluices. This has caused flooding in the Bhavani river and people living near the banks were issued a flood alert for all five days. There has been water logging in residential areas in Mettupalayam and Sirumugai. Four houses in Vachinampalayam, Sirumugai were damaged in the floods. Mettupalayam has also been experiencing continuous rainfall.
The District Collector K Rajamani inspected flooded areas near the Bhavani river and also the Bhavani Bridge, Sammana Water House and discussed about the damages in the region. Following this, the Collector has banned public from flocking to watch the raging waters of the Bhavani River and clicking selfies, stating that there is an imminent danger of people falling into the river by accident.
Addressing the media, the Collector said, “The rivers are flooded in the regions of Mettupalayam, Sulur and Valparai owing to the torrential rains in Coimbatore. 1300 people in low-lying regions have been evacuated to marriage halls, schools and colleges for safety. They have been provided with food, water, milk and all basic necessities. The Revenue Officers and firefighters are on the job continuously, to provide immediate relief."
