The torrential rains in the border regions of Tamil Nadu and Kerala for the past five days has led to water rising in the Pillur Dam to its maximum capacity of 100 feet. 48,000 cubic feet of water was released and now owing to continuous rainfall, 88,000 cubic feet of water was released last night. This has caused flooding of the Vanabadarakaliamman temple, Bhavani bridge, Odanthurai, Sirumugai and Kichakathiyur regions. The Revenue Department has evacuated people from these areas to camps.
A Disaster Relief Management meeting was held at the Mettupalayam Municipality Office led by the Divisional Officer, Suresh. Officials from all the Departments participated in the meeting including MP A K Selvaraj and MLA OK Chinnaraj.

All precautionary measures that needed to be taken in the event of disaster was discussed in the meeting, since weather reports have indicated that heavy rainfall was likely in the region for the next two days. It was decided to evacuate all people from low-lying areas to safer places, with the Police Department, Fire Department and Revenue Department asked to monitor the situation, day and night, to ensure safety. The Zonal Transport Officer Thiyagarajan, Tahsildhar Shanthamani and other officials were also present.
