Coimbatore: The Chairperson of the State Monitoring Committee of the National Green Tribunal, Jothimani, held a meeting regarding solid waste management rules implementation in Coimbatore, with reference to the Vellalore dump yard.
Coimbatore: The Chairperson of the State Monitoring Committee of the National Green Tribunal, Jothimani, held a meeting regarding solid waste management rules implementation in Coimbatore, with reference to the Vellalore dump yard.
The meeting was held today at the Circuit House and attended by the CCMC Commissioner, Sravan Kumar Jatavath along with various Department Heads of CCMC, and V Easwaran and K S Mohan, both petitioners in the Vellalore dump yard case.
Addressing the media after the meeting, the Chairman of the State Monitoring Commitee said, "The State Monitoring Committee was constituted by the NGT to review statewide implementation of solid waste management rules. The Committee has recommended few directions to CCMC to implement SWM rules. By June 2020, SWM rules will be fully implemented in Coimbatore."
"CCMC has agreed to conduct a mass propaganda to create awareness about source segregation. 60 percent of the problems will be solved if people can segregate waste at source. To enable door-to-door collection of segregated waste, 250 vehicles will be purchased along with the earlier planned 102 vehicles, using State Government funds," added the Chairman.
Commenting on the ongoing issues at Vellalore and to implement the bio mining process, Jothimani stated that a public consultation will be held in September. "Professor Joseph Kurian of Anna University will hand out instructions regarding the handling of legacy waste at the dump yard. Also, the Corporation has assured that by December 2019, 50 percent of the waste that reaches Vellalore will be segregated and by June 2020, only 100 percent segregated waste will reach the dump yard . Once the 65 MCCs that are planned come into operation and source segregation is implemented strictly, and with nearly 500 vehicles to ensure door-to-door collection , by June 2020 the CCMC will be able to completely implement SWM rules."
