Coimbatore district has been experiencing heavy torrential downpour this week. While the city had moderate rainfall this morning, a torrential downpour for over an hour was recorded in the afternoon, especially in Gandhipuram, Town Hall, Ramanathapuram, Peelamedu and Airport. Rainfall has been moderate thereafter.
River Noyyal is inundated due to the incessant heavy rains. District Collector K Rajamani issued a flood alert to the residents of the coastal region of River Noyyal as 4650 cubic feet of water inflow was recorded in the river. Traffic has been disrupted due to the bridges on Singanallur-Vellalur road and the Ondipudur-Pattanam road being submerged. Apart from traffic snarls, motorists are being forced to take diversions for several stretches.
The public have been flocked these stretches to have a glimpse of the gushing water above the bridges, an occurrence that is being witnessed after 20 years.
Since the Noyyal bridge in Ravuthar Pirivu has reportedly been submerged, villagers in the region have been stranded. Residents of Selvapuram and Aathupalam were evacuated to safer zones since rainwater had entered residential areas. Meanwhile, the District Collector K Rajamani inspected the Madhampatti bridge and the Kuniyamuthur Dam where rainwater inflow has been increasing.
