Coimbatore: Owing to the 30,000 to 88,000 cubic feet of surplus water discharged from the Pillur Dam at Mettupalayam, the overflowing River Bhavani engulfed houses along the river banks causing panic among residents in the region.

Mahalingam, Velliyangiri, Aarukutty and Aaran reside in Vachinampalayam, Sirumugai near River Bhavani. Even as 88,000 cubic feet of surplus water was discharged from the Pillur Dam last night, the banks of River Bhavani was flooded and water entered their homes.

Alarmed by the sudden flooding, Mahalingam, Velliyangiri and two others evacuated their family members to safer zones, even as the walls of their house collapsed, one by one. Since all the residents in the area were evacuated earlier, a major tragedy was averted.
The residents have requested the district administration to provide adequate relief for their loss. In some places, since power towers were damaged, power supply was also disrupted causing more inconvenience to the already alarmed residents in the region.
