Coimbatore : Following the torrential rainfall that Coimbatore has been experiencing, several houses in the low lying areas were inundated along the banks of the Noyyal. Many residential colonies Including Royal Gardens, Azad Nagar, New Colony, Madhina Nagar in Karumbukadai and the Athupalam areas were inundated since water flow in the Noyyal has reportedly increased due to the heavy rains.
Coimbatore : Following the torrential rainfall that Coimbatore has been experiencing, several houses in the low lying areas were inundated along the banks of the Noyyal. Many residential colonies Including Royal Gardens, Azad Nagar, New Colony, Madhina Nagar in Karumbukadai and the Athupalam areas were inundated since water flow in the Noyyal has reportedly increased due to the heavy rains.
Residents in these areas have been evacuated and given temporary accommodation in the nearby mosque and SIO office at Karumbukadai. A few Islamic organisations are helping residents to relocate. Nearly 60 houses were inundated and residents moved temporarily to safer buildings.
Abdul Hakkim, Secretary, Jamaat-e-Islami opines that both residents and authorities are equally responsible for this situation. “Waterways are blocked either by encroachments or garbage in these localities. If the channels were cleaned and blockages were removed, water would not have entered residential colonies. Also residents are equally responsible. Why build houses by encroaching on water channels? We keep telling people not to encroach water channels but neither the people nor politicians think about the consequences. Authorities do not come down hard on these encroachments due to political pressure . Authorities should take necessary action to quickly clean up all the water channels and take necessary steps to remove encroachments everywhere,” reiterated Hakkim.
The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation is working hard to clear the flooded colonies and prevent any untoward emergencies.
