Coimbatore : The Minister for Municipal Administration, Rural Development and Implementation of Special Programme, SP Velumani held a review meeting with officials to discuss the proceeding on various Smart City projects across 11 Corporations in Chennai. Smart City
Cities like Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Thanjavur, Salem, Vellore, Tirupur, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Trichy and Erode have been selected for implementing Smart City projects. Each district has been allotted funds of Rs.500 crore each. The Tamil Nadu Government has also equally contributed Rs. 500 crores on par with the Centre. The Central Government has approved 358 projects worth Rs. 10,554.75 crores across the 11 cities in Tamil Nadu.
AMRUT
Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) is being implemented in 28 local bodies in Chennai. Drinking water facility, sanitation facility, drainage work, solid waste management, rainwater harvesting, transportation infrastructure and open green spaces are the objectives of this scheme. In Tamil Nadu, 12 Corporations including Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai and Tanjore, 15 Municipalities and 1 Panchayat (28 cities) have been selected for implementing AMRUT. 445 projects at a budget of Rs.11,441.32 crores have been approved.
Minister S P Velumani reviewed the project status in-depth by reviewing every Corporation and Municipality. He also specified that there ought to be quick completion of projects within allotted time and ordered authorities to call for tenders in required projects before September 30. The Minister also ordered for a detailed execution plan to be prepared for ongoing projects and have them ready for tenders before October 1. He instructed the higher authorities to closely inspect the proceedings and asked them to bring any difficulty in execution of the projects to the immediate notice of concerned Development Heads. He also reminded that every project should be completed within five years of its announcement and advised authorities to work toward achieving this time frame.
