Coimbatore : Following a string of flagship wildlife and State symbol models that now streamline the City International Airport, a new attraction at the airport are colourful butterfly stickers adorning the premises to allow travellers a glimpse into the 'butterfly life' of Coimbatore.
Coimbatore : Following a string of flagship wildlife and State symbol models that now streamline the City International Airport, a new attraction at the airport are colourful butterfly stickers adorning the premises to allow travellers a glimpse into the 'butterfly life' of Coimbatore.
As many as 100 stickers with pictures of different butterflies found in the Coimbatore region have been stuck on the walls of the airport along with their species names in both Tamil and English. Commonly-found butterflies including the State butterfly Tamil Yeoman (Tamil Maravan), Tamil Lacewing, Common Banded Peacock, Crimson Rose, Common Rose and Lime Butterfly, along with rare butterflies like the Nilgiri tit are on display.
“The butterflies have been selected based on their presence in Coimbatore, so that people who visit here get to know the kind of creatures that live here,” said K Mohan Prasath from Act for Butterflies organisation that joined hands with the city airport for this unique initiative.
Talking about the initiative, the Terminal Director, R Mahalingam said that it was done as a part of the 'Nature and Culture' campaign at the city airport. “Butterflies make people happy. Not many people are scared of butterflies because they are beautiful and adorable. When our District is home to a wide array of butterfly species, it is important for people to know what inhabits Coimbatore," added R Mahalaingam.
Earlier, the airport premises had models of elephants, Nilgiri Tahr and cultural symbols including the Jallikattu Bull. Stickers of State Symbols including the State Bird Emerald Dove were also to be seen. The calendar of the city airport for the year 2019 has Birds and Butterflies as its theme.
