Coimbatore: Owing to the torrential rains that have been lashing the district over the past two days, the Pillur and Siruvani dams are brimming fast. Farmers are expected to highly benefit from the bounteous rains experienced in the district, according to K Rajamani, the District Collector.

Addressing the media, the District Collector said, "Pillur dam is overflowing with 16000 cusecs of surplus water being discharged into the Bhavani River and the Siruvani dam which has a total capacity of 50 ft. has reached 28.5 ft. storage within a few days. As rains are expected to continue for the next four days, all the tanks in the district are expected to reach its full capacity.”
Adding that security measures have been taken up to ensure that people are not affected by the heavy widespread rains in the district, the District Collector said that a flood warning has been issued due to the overflow from the Pillur Dam. "Authorities are constantly monitoring the situation and continue to take precautions in coordination with the concerned departments, and people living near the banks have been asked to move to higher grounds," he added.
Earlier, the Collector inaugurated a Handloom Day exhibition and sale at the District Collector's office on behalf of the Coimbatore District Handloom and Textile Department. Insurance for 11 individuals under the Mudra Scheme was distributed on the occasion.
“Every year on August 7, the National Handloom Day is observed to honour handloom weavers in the country and to highlight India's handloom industry. The day aims at the contribution of handloom to the socio-economic development of the country and also to increase the income of the weavers. In India, after agriculture, handloom is one of the leading employment opportunities for the poor,” emphasised the Collector.
The Handloom Day exhibition showcased Coimbatore Cotton, Negamam Cotton, Kora, Silk, Bedsheet, Towels, Churidars and Organic Cotton. About 1000 to 6000 sarees were on display for sale. The handloom sarees made by award-winning weavers were also showcased in the exhibition.
Addressing the media at the event, Raghunath, the Additional Director of the Handloom Department said, “A target of Rs.8 crores has been set for this year through this exhibition and sale which will be held for five days at the District Collectorate. To educate students about the handloom, the Handloom Exhibition will be held in KCT for three days and at Kongunadu and Kalaignar Karunanidhi College for two days,” he noted.
