Coimbatore: A flood alert continues to be in place for the third day following the huge discharge of over 20,000 cusecs of surplus water from the Pillur reservoir into the Bhavani River

People living near the banks have been asked to move to higher grounds.

Situated in the middle of the Western Ghats near Mettupalayam Pillur reservoir reached its full capacity yesterday.

After a year's gap, the Pillur dam has been receiving heavy inflows following which the flood gates are opened and surplus water discharged. Due to heavy rains in Attapadi, Siruvani areas of Kerala and other places in Nilgiri district, there is a surplus water inflow in the Pillur reservoir, which is being discharged.

Owing to the surplus water inflow to the Bhavani River, on Saturday a flood alert was issued to the people residing in the river banks.

Even as the huge inflow into Pillur reservoir had come down gradually after Monday midnight, the outflow from the reservoir had also been scaled-down.

However, the quantum of water inflow to Pillur reservoir is again increased from 6,000 cubic feet to 10,000 cubic feet. From Tuesday midnight onwards, 10,000 cusecs of surplus water are being discharged.

Owing to the water discharge, flood alert continues for the third day today.

Residents living on the banks near Alankombu, Lingapuram, Vachinampalayam and Nellithurai have been advised to reach higher grounds. The dam has almost reached its full capacity of 97 feet.
