Coimbatore: The Coimbatore District Auto Workers Union staged a protest at the South Taluk Office condemning the Motor Vehicles Amendment Bill passed by the Central Government.

Over 200 auto drivers participated in the protest led by P K Sukumaran, the General Secretary of the Coimbatore District Auto Drivers Union. The protesters demanded that the Centre should withdraw the Motor Vehicles Amendment Bill and that the State Government should immediately implement the meter tariff hike.

Addressing the media, Sukumaran noted that the Central Government had attempted to pass the Motor Vehicle Amendment Bill twice in the past. However, it was suspended later due to the protests of transport workers. "Just because the BJP Governemnt has won the majority to rule, it is trying to implement the Amendment Bill which is like mortgaging transport workers to corporate employers," protested Sukumaran, He added that the Amendment Bill is like following the Anti-labour Law when it is even difficult to earn Rs.200 to Rs.300 per day.

Sukumaran also slammed the State Government for the delay in regulating auto tariffs and demanded immediate action to decide on meter tariffs. He also demanded for the Court's decision to revise the tariff system once in two years to be implemented immediately. "Over 3 lakh auto workers in Tamil Nadu will stage a protest if the Motor Vehicle Amendment Bill is not withdrawn," warned Sukumaran.
