Flood alert: 18000 cubic feet of water released every second from Pillur Dam

Coimbatore: Following incessant rains in the catchment areas of Pillur dam, water inflow has increased to 16,000 cubic feet per second. With another two feet to go, the dam will reach it's full reservoir capacity of 100 feet.


Coimbatore: Following incessant rains in the catchment areas of Pillur dam, water inflow has increased to 16,000 cubic feet per second. With another two feet to go, the dam will reach it's full reservoir capacity of 100 feet. 



To ensure the safety of people living in low-lying areas along the Bhavani river, the district administration has issued a flood alert. As of Monday, 18,000 cubic feet per second water has been released into Bhavani river.



Owing to which, water level has increased in the river and the Bhavani Amman temple situated in the banks of the river is surrounded by water. The pilgrims are advised to stay safe and not to venture into the river for bathing or performing rituals. 



In many places, trees along the banks of the river were uprooted and hutments of tribals are reported to have washed away in the gushing waters.

Villages around Mettupalayam including Alangkombu, Kichakathiyur, Lingapuram have been issued with flood alert. Officials from district administration, Thasildhars' and Revenue officers are deputed to visit the villages and alert the people to relocate, if required. 



To avert any untoward incidents, the fire and rescue department have been put on alert. As the rains are expected to continue, all officials are asked to monitor the situation closely and report to the Collector.
