Western and coastal regions of TN to receive moderate rainfall for a week

Coimbatore: The western and coastal regions of Tamilnadu would receive an average of light to moderate rainfalls for the next one week in the wake of the low-pressure system developed in the Bay of Bengal.

With regions like Coimbatore receiving good rainfalls on Monday, the Southwest monsoon winds are expected to bring light to moderate rainfall throughout the western agro-climatic zone, in the next two days, which includes Erode, Salem, and Coimbatore. The sky will continue to be cloudy, said Professor V Geethalakshmi, Tamil Nadu Agriculture University.

"Likewise the North-Western Agro Climatic zone, comprising of Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, and Southern side along with the coastal areas such as Tuticorin, Ramanathapuram, Kanyakumari would have light rainfall in the next two days.

This climate may change on Thursday and Friday and there will be light drizzle or no rainfall at all for the entire state.

However, this situation is expected to change from Sunday, as there is a chance of light and moderate rainfalls in Northeastern district of Chennai, Cuddalore, Thiruvanamalai and Kancheepuram. Likewise the Western Ghat region including, Tenkasi, Rajapalayam, Coimbatore and other areas will also witness light and moderate rainfall," said Geethalakshmi.

She said that "considering the low pressure, the moderate conditions will bring 10 mm of rainfall for western and coastal regions. However, the low pressure in the Bay of Bengal will have little benefit for the Central part of the state. These regions even though may have a cloudy climate, there will be not much rainfall.

Despite receiving an average of 10 mm of rainfall during the entire southwest monsoon, the state will have a 10 percent deficit in rainfall than usual, she said. Though they expect a good rainfall during the North-East monsoon, the strength of El Nino, which was strong initially and expected to bring good rainfall, has weakened. The final analysis would come during September", she added.
