Coimbatore: A flood alert has been issued to the people residing on the banks of river Bhavani, in Mettupalayam, following the huge outflow of surplus waters from the Pillur reservoir.

The catchment areas of the Pillur dam including the forests in Kerala and Nilgiri mountains have been receiving heavy downpour as the southwest monsoon has intensified, following which the Pillur dam is brimming.
Meanwhile, heavy rains are recorded in many parts of Nilgiri district including Kundah and Gudalur since yesterday.
Moreover, the rainfall in the catchment areas of Pillur reservoir like Mulli and Attapadi have intensified in the last few days. The inflow which 3000 cubic feet by 8 am, had suddenly increased to 10000 cubic feet. This led to 9 ft. increase in the storage level leading to 96 ft.
Due to the continuous heavy inflow of water in the reservoir. The outflow is maintained at, 12,000 cubic feet into the Bhavani River.
Following which people residing on the banks of the river are cautioned not to venture into the river for bathing, fishing or attempt to cross it and are advised to move to safer locations.
The Mettupalayam Police and the Revenue Department have been warning residents to move to safer grounds and evacuate from low lying areas. As Surplus water is being discharged into the Bhavani River, the Bhavani Sagar Dam is experiencing heavy inflows.
