Coimbatore: "Monsoon will return and save Tamil Nadu from water scarcity," stated Kalyana Sundaram, the Deputy Principal of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) at the first anniversary of Vidya Niketan in Ramampalayam, Mettupalayam. He awarded gold coins, certificate and awards to students who excelled academically.
Coimbatore: "This year, the monsoon will not fail us. They are just delayed. Water bodies in Tamil Nadu will get revived after monsoon showers pick up", stated Dr.M. Kalyanasundaram, Dean Agricultural College and Research Institute, Mettupalayam at the first anniversary of Bharath Vidya Niketan in Ramampalayam, Mettupalayam.
Addressing the media later, Dean Agricultural College and Research Institute, "Many regions in Tamil Nadu, including Chennai are facing severe water crisis.
The long-awaited monsoon also did not bring in as much rainfall as expected due to the prevailing gusty winds. But our scientists at Agricultural University have predicted that the monsoon will be delayed but not fail us."
Mr. Kalyana Sundaram also reiterated that people need not panic of the water crisis as monsoon rains will bring adequate rains to revamp our water bodies.
He also stressed on the importance of water conservation and said enough care should be taken in future, to conserve water.
"Farmers need to be educated on how to adopt to farming techniques with minimal water resources. They need to be aware on crops that needs to be cultivated during drought seasons. Drip water irrigation and other techniques can help farmers take yield despite water scarcity", the Dean opined.
He also noted that the Government has provided facilities and subsidies for farming in dry seasons and ti tackle water scarcity.
The Dean apprised that this year, 7000 more admissions to the under graduate agricultural courses have been received. A total of 52,000 students have applied this academic year.
"This is indeed a welcome change to see more youth opting for agriculture courses and in particular more women have opted to enroll this year," he added.
