Police seized 22.5 kg of banned tobacco products from a car in Coimbatore’s Thudiyalur and registered a case against a 26-year-old man, while another youth was arrested in Saravanampatti for allegedly possessing and selling banned tobacco products. In a separate incident, four youths were booked for consuming alcohol in a public place in R.S. Puram.
Police intensified action against the possession and sale of banned tobacco products in Coimbatore, seizing 22.5 kg of such products in one operation at Thudiyalur and arresting a youth in a separate case at Saravanampatti. Acting on a tip-off that banned tobacco products had been stored for sale near Bhagheerathi Hospital at Appanaickenpalayam, near the Thudiyalur Junction, a police team led by Special Sub-Inspector Murugesan conducted a search in the area.
The police found a 26-year-old man allegedly in possession of the banned products. Another person, identified as Karthik (26), reportedly fled from the spot and is being searched for.
Police seized 31 packets of Hans weighing 9.3 kg, 110 packets of Vimal weighing 6.27 kg and 54 packets of Cool Lip weighing 6.99 kg, taking the total quantity of banned tobacco products seized to about 22.5 kg.
The Thudiyalur C6 police registered a case in connection with the seizure and issued a summons to the 26-year-old man as part of the investigation. Efforts are under way to trace the other accused who allegedly fled from the spot.
Separate seizure in Saravanampatti
In another case, the Saravanampatti police received information that banned tobacco products were being sold near a TASMAC outlet on Vilankurichi Road. A police team led by Sub-Inspector Arulperumal kept watch in the area and intercepted a 26-year-old man who was found behaving suspiciously.
During a search, police allegedly found 49 packets of Hans and 35 packets of Cool Lip in his possession. The products were seized and the man was arrested. He was later released on bail.
Four booked for public drinking
Meanwhile, four youths were booked by the R.S. Puram police for allegedly consuming alcohol in a public place near the Sastri Maidan.
A police team on patrol found the four men allegedly drinking alcohol in a section of the grounds. They were taken into custody, booked and later released on bail, police said.
