Coimbatore : Mystery prevails among the DMK cadres in the district, as around 550 of their cadres including MLA N. Karthick of Singanallur Constituency who were courted arrest this morning for staging protest at CCMC are yet to be released.
The cadres spear-headed by MLA N. Karthik opt to stage an agitation in front of the City Corporation Office in Town Hall, even after the City Police Commissioner denied permission citing the order by the Apex Court banning protests on highways. The protest was organised to show their disapproval against the water distribution contract accorded to a private multinational company 'Suez' and also demanding resignation of Minister S.P. Velumani.
All the cadres were courted arrest and kept in custody at a private marriage hall in Kottamedu area here. Though the police usually would release the protestors by evening, the arrested DMK cadres were held back. While it was speculated that they would be released by night after dinner, the situation seems to be 'tricky' as the police have beefed up the security in the area hinting a possible remand of all cadres.
Speaking on the issue to SimpliCity, MLA N. Karthik "We are clueless on what's happening. When asked on our release, the police told us that they are yet to receive orders from their superiors. Looks like, they are planning to remand us."
He further alleged that the police have not provided dinner to all. "Many are actually starving. The elderly and diabetic have been made to suffer. Though the 170 women cadres were asked to leave, they preferred to stay back, as the police haven't updated on releasing us. We are ready to face charges but keeping us in a place without food and proper toilet facilities is condemnable", the MLA told.
