Coimbatore : With the ever-increasing traffic congestion caused due to the Athupalam-Ukkadam flyover, the city traffic police have come up with a suggestion to shift the Mofussil bus stand at Ukkadam to the Kurichi lake bund. This temporary bus stand can be used by the buses plying from Palghat, Pollachi, Palani and Udumalpet.
With the ongoing Athupalam-Ukkadam flyover work in progress, people residing along the Palghat road from Athupalam, Kuniamuthur till Valayar and along the Pollachi road in Kurichi, Sundarapuram, Eachanari and Malumichapatti find it very hard to commute to the city and back home. Travel , particularly through buses have become a nightmare since buses are diverted either through Puttuvikki or through Nanjundapuram to reach the city and back.
For the Mofussil buses, travel distance has increased since buses to Pollachi road have to go through Nanjundapuram and buses from and to Palghat have to travel via Puttuvikki and take a longer route. But with the plan to shift the bus stand, traffic through alternate routes can also be eased.

According to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic (in charge), P Perumal, "The temporary bus stand will be constructed at the eastern bund of the Kurichi Lake adjacent to the Pollachi road. It is expected to be about 800m in length. After the place was inspected by senior police officials, a recommendation has been sent to CCMC, PWD , National Highways and State Transport Corporation. We have also made suggestions for amenities like temporary shelters, toilets, street lights, security cameras. Now the proposal has to be approved by the concerned departments to get a go ahead," detailed the Deputy Commissioner.
The temporary bus stand at Kurichi Lake is expected to ease traffic woes for the regular commuters for sure. "The temporary bus stand will certainly help reduce traffic congestion in the alternate routes suggested because of the Athupalam-Ukkadam flyover work. This bus stop will function till the flyover work is completed," added the senior police official.
A senior Corporation official confirmed the receipt of such a proposal and said that the plan is now under discussion and the CCMC Commissioner is expected to take a call on it very soon.
