Coimbatore : With private schools mushrooming in Tamil Nadu, parents prefer paying thousands to enroll their children in them rather than in Government schools.
To combat this reversal, the Tamil Nadu Government has taken steps to commence LKG and UKG grades based on Montessori methods. This is a trial scheme and will be monitored for three years to ascertain the number of student enrollment and the quality of education being imparted. If both measure up, the scheme will be made permanent.
There are 2381 Anganwadi Centres in Tamil Nadu. In Coimbatore alone, there are 122 such Centres in which 588 boys and 594 girls have been enrolled for LKG and UKG classes. All those enrolled are to receive 4 sets of uniforms and a pair of shoes. Children studying in hilly regions will also receive a sweater and a pair of rain boots.
The Tn Government is hoping that commencing LKG and UKG will allow more parents to choose Government schools over private schools. The Government has also appointed recognised English teachers to enable quality education. Veni, the mother of Prathap, a three-year old says, "We hail from a very poor background and so paying thousands for private schools was never an option. The LKG and UKG being commenced in Government schools has helped many parents like me to enroll their children for quality education."
