49th death anniversary of farmers who were killed in 1970 by police firing observed

Tirupur: A memorial event was held at Kanakkampalayam, near Perumanallur in Tirupur district on Wednesday in honour of the farmers who died in the line of fire by the police in the year 1970.


Tirupur: A memorial event was held at Kanakkampalayam, near Perumanallur in Tirupur district on Wednesday in honour of the farmers who died in the line of fire by the police in the year 1970. 



Members of several farmers association from Coimbatore, Avinashi and Tirupur gathered in large numbers at Kanakkampalayam in Tirupur to pay floral tributes to the farmers who lost their lives in 1970 during a massive protest against the Tamil Nadu State government for hiking the electricity tariff from 8 paise to 10 paise.



Three farmers belonging to the Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam were shot dead by the police in Perumanallur in Tirupur district.

It is to be re-called that around 47 farmers were killed in various protests in the State in police firing between 1970-80.
