Coimbatore: DMK MLA N Karthik organized a protest comprising of about 400 people highlighting issues like the rising water problems, denial of rights given to a foreign company for handling water supplies and calling for the dismissal of S P Velumani for being irresponsible these issues.
The protest took place in front of the Coimbatore Corporation office. The protestors carried placards displaying the need for water and the dismissal of the minister. They shouted slogans supporting their cause, debasing the Coimbatore Corporation for their inactivity and not heeding to the queries of the people. The MLA also said that the CM of Tamil Nadu was just a toy, who is not interested in the realities of life.
People also claimed that Pillaiyar puram was drastically hit by drought. The protestors also demanded action against on denial of electricity and the bad sewage system which caused many health issues. On Minister S P Velumani, the angry protestors demanded to know "whether Velumani was the Minister of Tamil Nadu or his constituency, Thondamuthur.” The Government ambulance services were also reportedly denied in areas where the terrain was rough.
One of the protestors, Kalavathi, fiercely opined that water being one of the five basic natural elements must not be sold to a foreign country and the agreement ought to be cancelled. The protestors displayed their protest carrying empty plastic troughs. Women also participated in the protest to show their acrimony.
Since the protest was organized in front of the Coimbatore Corporation office which is located in the heart of the city, many office-goers were both delayed and affected. But despite the protest being for a huge cause, there were groups more interested in taking selfies and updating their WhatsApp statuses.
The DMK protestors who were jammed in the small area in near the office, continued to shout saying, "The next CM will be “Our Thalapathiyaar”, referring to the DMK Chief M K Stalin. Several Police officers were also gathered at the spot kept the protest from turning violent.
