It is to be recalled that there have been three other similar elephant attacks in the same area in which one person died. The residents of the area accused the forest department of failing to control movement of wild elephants in their residential areas and thus staged a road roko.

Owing to this, traffic came to a grinding halt on the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border for over three hours. The protestors demanded to fix electric fences wherever necessary and reiterated the need to permanently chase away the straying wild elephants into the deeper regions of the Forest Reserve. They also advocated proper maintenance and deepening of trenches.
MLA Dravidamani of Gudalur and Soman Suresh, the Gudalur Forest Officer arrived at the spot of the road roko and reassured the protestors of taking immediate action in this regard.
