Coimbatore: Tense situations prevailed in Karumathampatti here on Saturday after officials commenced the land survey work to install high tension power towers in farmlands.
Despite stiff opposition from the farmers, the officials commenced land surveys to install high tension power towers at farmlands in Karumathampatti here.
It is to be recalled that a few days back, land survey to install high tension power grids in Semmandampalayam area was temporarily dropped, after farmers and the public climbed up the tower and threatened to jump, if high power grids were installed.
Not paying heed to their threats, the officials resumed work today at Karumathampatti, amidst strong police protection. The irked residents gathered at the juncture and staged agitation condemning the governement.
Commotion erupted as the public were hell-bent on stopping the officials from land surveying. Subsequently, all efforts by the police and the officials to pacify the farmers went in vain.
