He slammed the Southern Railways' controversial circular that asked railway employees to only speak in Hindi or English and not in Tamil and termed it outrageous.
Coimbatore : With the Centre showing signs of making Hindi mandatory across the country, MP P R Natarajan strongly condemned the Government for using the Railways as a back door to enforce Hindi.
He slammed the Southern Railways' controversial circular that asked railway employees to only speak in Hindi or English and not in Tamil and termed it outrageous.
The circular was issued in the wake of a major mishap being averted in Thirumangalam where two trains were travelling on the same track. It was later found out that the mishap happened due to not understanding the language when a non-Tamil station master failed to understand the information sent by another station master, ended up sending the train instead of holding it. Both officials were suspended.
P R Natarajan reiterated that there had never been an accident in Tamil Nadu caused by misunderstanding the language between officials. He said it highly unacceptable that even after a major tragedy has been averted, the Southern Railways insists on using English or Hindi as the only medium of communication on the job.
The MP said the solution for such an issue would be to ensure that only officials knowing a particular State's language should be operating in that State for smooth and safe functioning of the railways. P R Natarajan further added that the action of the Centre to impose Hindi in regional Government offices needs to be strongly condemned.
