Eco tourism in spruced up Kovai Kuttralam to commence in a week

Coimbatore: After almost three months of closure, Eco tourism at Kovai Kuttralam located deep inside the Siruvani forest is all set to be open to public within a week’s time as maintenance work have neared completion.

Coimbatore: After almost three months of closure, Kovai Kuttralam is all geared up to once again throw open its 'Eco tourism' deep inside the Siruvani forest, in a week's time.

The maintenance work has almost drawn to a close. With the southwest monsoon bestowing abundant water in the region, Kovai Kuttralam is looks all spruced up with newly-laid roads and a renovated bathing area.

Kovai Kuttralam has been closed since March 25 due to severe drought with the falls nearly drying up. As rains continued to fail, the water level continued to be low and hence there was extended closure for eco tourism. The movement of elephants was on the rise in the forest area, with water bodies drying out in other areas.

Keeping in mind the drought, forest officials decided to use the season to renovate the area. “The bathing area needed some renovation as there were many potholes where women and children usually stand. Hence, we decided to close it,” said District Forest Officer, D Venkatesh. He added that currently bitumen roads were being laid from the Sadivayal hamlet up to the parking area inside the Reserve since the roads were earlier damaged and made commuting bumpy for tourists. “Once the road is ready, we will open the Kovai Kuttralam facility,” informed the District Forest Officer.
