Coimbatore: The continuous efforts by the Police Department in the West zone of the State which includes eight districts to identify the most accident-prone regions and take necessary measures to prevent accidents has helped in lowering accident rates and cases filed in both Coimbatore and Nilgiris districts.

The accidents recorded in the the previous year and the current year shows a difference of 975.
22,674 awareness programs conducted by the police have gone a long way in bringing down the number of accidents. The police have filed 6,90,874 cases this year which is 3,33,742 cases more than the previous year. Helmet offence cases are seen as increased by 2,37,010 cases than last year. 90,699 cases have been filed for not complying with the seat belt rule. This was 22,923 cases more than the last year. 33,343 licenses have been temporarily withdrawn as recommended by the police.
9601 drunken driving cases have been filed this year which is 4551 cases more than the last year. 7,795 over speeding cases as against last year's 2793 cases, 1478 overloading cases this year as against last year's 772 cases, 46,305 cases of using phone while driving this year as against 12,514 cases from last year and 20,970 cases this year for over boarding vehicles which is 3719 cases more than last year were filed.
Accident-prone areas being identified and marked as black spot areas, along with many awareness programs being held, helped reduce accidents in the Coimbatore and Nilgiris districts.
