Coimbatore : The mortal remains of five people from the Nilgiris and Coimbatore district who were part of a pilgrimage group to Kasi succumbed to heat waves at Jhansi railway station in Uttar Pradesh reached the city on Thursday.

Unable to bear the extreme heat conditions five elderly victims Pachaiappan, 80, Balakrishnan, 67, Subbarayan, 87 from the Nilgiris, Devayanai, 74, and Kaladevi 58 from Ondiputhur, Coimbatore died in the train and at hospital in UP on Monday.
While the bodies of Pachaiyappan and Devayanai were sent through train, the remaining bodies were airlifted. However, citing the bodies decomposed state, there was a delay in airlifting from New Delhi. After the intervention of the Nilgiris District administration, the mortal remains were flown from New Delhi to the city.
The mortal remains of all the deceased were handed over to their family.
