Coimbatore : In a recent development, the NIA have confirmed to have arrested Mohammed Azharuddin of Coimbatore, one of the prime accused among the six Islamic State (IS) members on whom cases were filed in May 2019 for their involvement in recruiting youth and planning terrorist attacks in South India, especially Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
Coimbatore : In a recent development, the NIA have confirmed to have arrested Mohammed Azharuddin of Coimbatore, one of the prime accused among the six Islamic State (IS) members on whom cases were filed in May 2019 for their involvement in recruiting youth and planning terrorist attacks in South India, especially Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
The NIA through their official twitter handle have confirmed his arrest. It is speculated that Mohammed Azharuddin will be produced at NIA's Court in Kochi on Thursday. He has been arrested under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, an act to provide for the more effective prevention of certain unlawful activities of individuals and associations, for dealing with terrorist activities and for matters connected therewith.

The NIA further confirmed that "The prime accused Mohammed Azharuddin has been the leader of the module and has been maintaining the Facebook page named -KhilafahGFX-, through which he had been propagating the ideology of ISIS/ Daish. Accused Mohammed Azarudeen has been a facebook friend of Sri Lankan suicide bomber Zahran Hashim and other members of the module have also been sharing radical contents attributed to Ahran Hashim, over the social media."
"The accused persons and their associates were propagating the ideology of proscribed terrorist organization ISIS/ Daish on social media with the intention of recruiting vulnerable youth into the ISIS/ Daish for carrying out terrorist vac) in South India especially in Kerala and Tamil Nadu", confirmed a report from NIA.
The six people have been identified as Mohammed Azharuddin of Coimbatore; Azharuddin T of Nanjundapuram, Podanur; Sheik Hidyathullah, Alameen Colony, South Ukkadam; Aboobacker M of Kuniamuthur; Sadham Hussain of Aasath Nagar, Karumbukadai and Ibrahim Shahin of Mania Thottam.
The NIA officials in May 2019 registered a case (RC-02/2019/NIA/KOC (ISIS Kerala-Tamil Nadu Module case) and booked case on six Islamic people from the City affiliated to IS module based and for their involvement in recruiting youth and planning terrorist attacks in South India, especially Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
Raids at multiple places were conducted by the NIA on Wednesday at the houses of the gang and 'suspicious' articles were seized. Following the raid, inquiry was ongoing with the six people at the NIA office in Race Course. Following which, Mohammed Azharuddin claimed to be the prime accused has been arrested.
