Ahead of 'World Elder Abuse Awareness Day', Collector urges respect and care for senior citizens

Coimbatore: The District Collector, K Rajamani released a press report on Tuesday regarding the 'World Elder Abuse Awareness Day' which is to be observed on June 15.

Coimbatore: The District Collector, K Rajamani released a press report on Tuesday regarding the 'World Elder Abuse Awareness Day' which is to be observed on June 15.

His report stated that the population of elders aged above 60 years was on the rise owing to better medical treatment facilities and nutritious food that has significantly increased the life span of senior citizens. According to statistics, by 2050, the population of people above 65 years will increase by 14 percent. "Though the increase in number of elders constituting our population makes us happy, it is our responsibility to help them cope up with their inabilities, fatigue and other age-related issues," stressed the District Collector.

"The Tamil Nadu Government has devised various plans and schemes for the welfare of senior citizens, like opening homes for the aged and so on. But, ageing causes financial, psychological and health-related issues. The growing affinity for nuclear families and western culture have contributed to lack of care for elders in the family. And so we should understand the importance of elders in our lives and society at large, and work for the welfare of our senior citizens," stated K Rajamani in his report.

He also released a pledge to be taken on the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. The pledge reads, "As a citizen of India, I will treat the elders in the family with due affection; I will not use harsh words against them. In no way will I abuse elders, both mentally and physically. I will give preference to the elders in public places like hospitals, buses, banks and will rise to the occasion to stand up for them whenever abuse happens against the elders and resolve them."
